Cosmetic Regulations For Personal Care Products

Cosmetic regulation is a misnomer. The FDA (Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act) was created in 1938 and is the designated government agency that should control the Cosmetic Industry as well as the Food and Drug Industries. However, although it does a fair job in food and drugs, it virtually has turned its back on cosmetics and allows it to govern itself.
Cosmetics have a very rich history and from the time of the Egyptians to current day the obsession for fair, beautiful skin has helped this industry to grow and prosper to over 50 billion dollars annually. The Cosmetic Industry, in all countries, is controlled by government bodies and agencies. These agencies presumably are in place for the purpose of keeping a tab on the quality of cosmetic products that are being produced. Cosmetic regulation of personal care products that are produced is the primary responsibility of these bodies. Therefore, in theory at best, US cosmetic regulations for personal care products rests with the FDA.
The question becomes is the FDA truly regulating or governing the Cosmetic Industry?.
The regulations framed under the FDA are quite similar to other countries but there are certain unique features. Though one of the FDA's functions is to regulate the Cosmetic Industry, it gives more emphasis on the regulation of food and drugs. For drugs that are manufactured in the US, prior to their release into the market, they will require the necessary certification from the FDA. However, because personal care products are not considered to be food or drugs, they require no prior certification by the FDA or any other governing body before they are introduced into the marketplace. In fact, the FDA relies solely on the discretion of the cosmetic companies to determine the safety of products marketed to consumers. If the cosmetic company says their new product is safe, it is allowed to go to market without any pre-market testing. Therefore, in effect, cosmetic regulation is left up to the cosmetic companies and thus, is a self-regulating industry.
The following are direct quotes from the FDA website:
"Cosmetic products and ingredients are not subject to FDA pre-market approval authority, with the exception of color additives."
"Cosmetic firms are responsible for substantiating the safety of their products and ingredients before marketing."
According to the FDA there are specific definitions for cosmetics and drugs and one must first go through them to understand the fine difference that exists. Cosmetics are the articles that are sprinkled, poured, applied or rubbed on the body to clean, promote, beautify or even alter one's appearance. Some of the products that fall under this category are perfumes, hair colors, toothpastes, lipsticks, eye and facial makeup, shampoos, fingernail polishes, skin moisturizers, permanent waves, and deodorants. This even includes the ingredients that may be used as a component to manufacture the cosmetic products.
Regarding these ingredients used in the manufacture of personal care products, there is another act known as The Substances Control Act of 1976. This act grandfathered in 62,000 chemicals in existence up to 1976. Of all new chemicals submitted for approval, their record indicates that over 80% are approved within three weeks and only five chemicals are known to have been restricted or banned. It should also be made known that no pre-testing on animals and/or humans is required before submitting a chemical for approval. Meanwhile, in Europe, the European Union has banned over 1100 toxic ingredients used in the manufacture of cosmetic products. Now, with this in mind, let's apply this knowledge to the FDA and its control, or the lack thereof, relative to the Cosmetic Industry.
We know that the FDA allows the Cosmetic Industry to police itself. In fact, if cosmetic companies do not even have to register with the FDA, and if these companies are not required to get approval by the FDA of new products to market, and if these companies do not have to identify the ingredients used in the manufacture of their personal care products, and if these ingredients can be approved by The Substance Control Act of 1976 within three weeks without any pre-testing, then it is safe to say the only conclusion to arrive at is, the Cosmetic Industry is out of control. After all, if no one is in control of cosmetic companies, it only stands to reason, that the industry is out of control. It's interests lie in sales and profits and not in the well bring of their consumers. Cosmetic regulation is virtually non-existent and, therefore, places the burden of safety directly on the shoulders of consumers. The toxic ingredients in cosmetic products has been discussed in depth in some of my previous articles. The consumer must read labels and research ingredients themselves to insure the safety of the product and not rely on any government agency for the regulation of personal care products.

Toxic Free Cosmetics - For Long Lasting Health

Opting for toxic-free cosmetics is the best thing that you can do to your skin, and your health as well as the environment. Enhancing your beauty through products like vegetable based cosmetic mineral make up and organic cosmetics is the new way to promote long term health. There is no reason why one should continue using toxic cosmetics.
Most of the cosmetics that are on the market are made up of chemicals that are banned in other countries. This is because of the incomprehensible stand of our government, which gives the cosmetic manufacturers a free hand to make rampant use of these harmful chemicals. That issue, although explained in this article, will be dealt with in detail separately in another article. The first thing that we need to do is discover how to protect our skin and general well being from the harmful effects of these toxic cosmetics.
New research has shown that exposure to toxic chemicals that raise havoc with our hormones could increase the risk of breast cancer. This is particularly true for teenagers and pregnant women when they expose themselves to these active ingredients in cosmetic products. Europe has made great progress in regulating cosmetics. The European Union (EU) passed an amendment to the "Cosmetics Directive", the law that regulates cosmetics in all 15 EU countries. It would ban any and all chemicals that were known or highly suspected of causing cancer, birth defects, or genetic mutation from use in cosmetic products. Hundreds of chemicals (over 1100) were prohibited.
Some US cosmetic companies responded by saying "American women are not as concerned about cosmetics as the Europeans." How dare they decide what concerns one has! One large cosmetic firm had a real disconnect and responded to a written request regarding the use of Pthalates (pronounced tha-lates and just a fancy word for fragrance and found in over 79% of all cosmetic products), saying "the US has the safest products that our laws will allow both for the consumer and for the environment". However in South Korea, that same company, in response to similar consumer concerns, acted in a somewhat different manner when the "Women's Committee of the Korean Federation for Environmental Movements" tested 24 products for a toxic ingredient known as Pthalates. One hundred percent of products tested had Pthalates. Ninety-six percent had more than two Pthalates. Fifty percent had more than three and eight percent had four different kinds. Now that same company that responded to the US inquiry saying what they used was safe, now responded in South Korea this way. "Our firm does not use DEHP and DBP (Pthalates), about which concerns have been raised, as components of our products". They subsequently removed all Pthalates from their products.
Another very large company took one position in the US, but when challenged in the UK, said this:"We agree with the Women's Environmental Network position on the inherent toxicological potential of Pthalates. We take a precautionary approach and will only use an ingredient if it is safe and approved for use in Cosmetic products. As a consequence of this approach, there is already a program to remove Pthalates from our products."
In April of 2004 there was a march on the US Capitol that organizers claimed was the largest of its kind. More than one million people joined in the March for Women's Lives and it became the launching pad for an organization known as the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. The campaign's message promotes toxic-free cosmetic products. It pledged to replace hazardous chemicals found in cosmetic products with safer alternatives within three years. To accomplish this it asked cosmetic manufacturers in the US to do four things:
1.Remove European Union banned chemicals form all products sold throughout the world.
2.Inventory all products for chemicals of concern.
3.Develop a plan to replace hazardous chemicals with safer alternatives within three years.
4.Report their progress publicly.
Within a few months a small number of companies began signing the Compact for Safe Cosmetics. By 2007, some three years later, over 500 companies had signed the Compact. Ninety of these companies were from outside the US. However, all the signers were already natural product companies and notably, not even one major US cosmetic company was on the list. The reason? The US Cosmetic Industry is the most unregulated industry under the auspices of the FDA. How does the FDA determine if a cosmetic product is safe, one might ask? The answer is it does not. It leaves safety up to the individual companies themselves. In other words, if the cosmetic company feels its product is safe, it can go on the market.
In 2007 the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics ran a full page ad in USA today. The ad read "Putting on Makeup Shouldn't be like Playing with Matches" and showed a little girl smearing lipstick on her face. Three large cosmetic companies were named in the ad. Within three months all three cosmetic companies removed the EU banned chemicals from their lipstick and produced what essentially became a toxic-free product.
Let's be clear here. That example represents only one product in a lineup of cosmetic products that run into the hundreds per cosmetic company. So, although this was a great step forward, it is only one small step in the big scheme of things with the ultimate mission being to get all cosmetic companies to reformulate their lines to new standards of toxic-free ingredients in all products resulting in safe, healthy, toxic-free cosmetics for everyone.
Everyone can help to move this very important process along by shopping for and buying only certified organic personal care products. To do this one must look for the certification logos on any cosmetic products they purchase. These logos will be prominently displayed along with the logos for no animal testing, bio-degradable, etc.

Cosmetic History Worldwide and the Growth of the Cosmetic Industry

Cosmetic history worldwide has gone through a sea of change over the past few centuries. Today the cosmetic industry is worth over $50 billion, but this was not always the case. Before we study more about the history of cosmetics, we need to search the origin of cosmetics. Cosmetics was not a business during its nascent stage and it was solely used to enhance the look of the facial skin. It all started during the 4th century BC when cosmetics and business were words from two different worlds.
If we look into the history of cosmetics then we find that the Egyptians were the precursors of cosmetic use. Here the women of the upper class used animal fat, scented oils and eye color to give a real 'facelift' to their faces. During its initial years, cosmetics were restricted to the confines of a room where they were prepared from natural ingredients. Cosmetics had not yet found any commercial use though it was exchanged among women.
The western world also embraced it (though a little late) much to the dissatisfaction of the Church and Queen Victoria. The use of cosmetics here was more among the lower class women and this is what slowly gave rise to cosmetics being manufactured for sale among the common masses. The French were the first to manufacture cosmetics on a large scale with the use of new and improved methods. They replaced the dangerous ingredients like copper and lead with Zinc oxide and other harmless chemicals. This soon resulted in wide sales of cosmetics and women from the elite as well as lower classes started to use it for their facial beautification.
The history of cosmetics changed with the end of World War II and the industrial growth during the 1940's, when cosmetics found acceptance among women from all corners of the world. With the advent of the electronic media like Television and Radio, things looked really sunny for the cosmetic industry as actresses wore cosmetic makeup that attracted the general masses - a huge boost to the sales figures. Soon more and more women turned it into a habit to wear cosmetic makeup for almost all occasions.
People, mostly associated with the cosmetic industry, wanted to manufacture healthier and better products because they did not treat this as a business but something that even had use in their homes. Technological advancements made it easier for the companies to try out different ingredients for their cosmetics and this has also provided a plethora of options in front of modern consumers. Cosmetic history worldwide is all about providing the right kinds of cosmetics to satiate the obsession to look beautiful and remain young..
Nowadays, the cosmetic industry is not only concentrating on cosmetics for women, but even providing the metro-sexual males a chance to improve their facial looks. Today, the world's cosmetic industry faces a huge demand and a real challenge in producing good quality cosmetic products. It is still a highly lucrative business for new entrants, but the challenge now comes from clinical studies that show the existence of toxic ingredients that are currently used in the manufacture of cosmetic products. These ingredients, used over long periods of time, are now being considered harmful to one's health. Therefore, the history of cosmetics today wills evolve into where the industry will go in the future with this new information that indicates the continuous use of these toxic ingredients could be harmful to one's health.
Little did the Egyptians know then, when they were short of options and they sat in front of the mirror to use their cosmetics, what challenges would exist today.

Tips To Use Skin Care Cosmetics Safely

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which regulates cosmetics in the United States defines cosmetics as: "intended to be applied to the human body for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance without affecting the body structure or functions." This broad definition includes, as well, any material intended for use as a component of a cosmetic product.
Producers distinguish between decorative cosmetics and skin care cosmetics. Decorative cosmetics are includes lipstick, foundation, rouge, nail polish, mascara, eye liner, etc. Skin care cosmetics are includes products to cleanse face skin and body skin, creams and lotions to moisturize the face and body, sunscreens to protect the skin from damaging UV radiation, and products to repair or hide skin imperfections such as acne, wrinkles, dark circles under eyes, etc.

Though it would undoubtedly bring back memories, these items may be difficult to find. However, the task is made easier these days with the Internet as there are many online stores that specialize in such items. Even if you do not need a vintage set in your kitchen, you should have at least one good pepper and salt shaker set as part of the kitchen or dining room accessories. It is almost unheard of for families living in houses to go without a decent set. In fact, many families keep the sets as collectibles and simply adore looking at them.

Some vintage salt and pepper mills are even worth a fortune, much like any other form of collectible items like coins and stamps. For a non-aficionado, you might wonder what the attraction of such trivia items is, but if you talk to an expert, you will find that there is much more to a good set than just being a functional piece.

For one, salt and pepper mills make great collectible items. Not all shakers are made the same with different designs coming from all parts of the world. The good thing is that every culture in the world has a need for such an item which is why they are produced almost everywhere in the world. So you get designs which are infused with the local cultures. It is this element that makes the shaker sets such good collectibles. These sets, especially the vintage ones, can be worth a lot of money and make a great conversational piece when placed in show cabinets at home.

The salt and peppers shakers of yesteryear were mostly made from durable materials like ceramics, glass and sterling silver. This makes them long-lasting and they can even be kept as an heirloom to be passed down through the family for generations. Besides, the vintage pieces made from such materials are very elegant and lend an air of nobility to the kitchen.

Above all, salt and pepper shakers are functional items. Unlike stamps or coins, these items can actually be of every day use. If you are entertaining in your home, you might want to show off your collectibles to your guests. Instead of just placing them in the show cabinet, consider using them as part of the dining table accessories. This will surely capture the attention of your guests, leading them to compliment their beauty.

Practical Tips On Buying Cocktail Shakers

One of life's most incredible joys is to sit out in the front porch with a glass of your favorite cocktail. If you are in the market for a set of cocktail shakers, you should know that there are various choices from which you can take your pick. In addition, all these shakers have different features and advantages so it is best to know what they are to find out which one would best suit your needs.

Choice of Material

Cocktail shakers are made of different materials, among which include tin, aluminum, and stainless steel. If you are looking for something light and easy to clean, you might want to go with tin or stainless steel. Most novices prefer these two materials because they are easy to use and they do not require much maintenance like other metal shakers.

There are also other types of shakers such as glass or plastic. The latter is often used for outdoor events or gatherings where it is best not to use breakables or anything that is too heavy to carry. Glass is a little less popular but there are some who prefer to have at least one of these in their liquor cabinet as part of the display.

Straining and Other Features

The most important function of cocktail shakers is to facilitate the making of beverages so they have to dispense liquid in a seamless manner. Quick strainers are very popular as they are the ones used by professional bartenders. These quick straining shakers make it possible to prepare more drinks in shorter amounts of time, which directly translates to faster work and more sales and tips.

The shape of a drink shaker is also very important, as in the case of the screwpull mixer. This particular shaker is designed in such a way that it is very easy to hold on to while concocting the beverage. It is especially popular among lady barkeeps since they have relatively smaller hands than male bartenders. There are also other features such as non-slip rubber traction, which comes in handy a lot of the time.

Cost

If you are looking to stock your liquor cabinet with supplies for home use, it is only sensible that you try to find cost effective shakers and other accessories. When shopping for shakers, you have the option of buying merchandise from specialty stores or online. If you choose the latter, there are a number of websites that sell different types of drink shakers at varied prices. Comparing cost and features would allow you to make informed choices particularly if you are on a shoe string budget.

The Only Way to Buy Cosmetics

Cosmetics have been used for the enhancement of beauty for ages, and there is no dearth in their demands. Modern men and women use cosmetics on a regular basis but why do they face skin and/or health problems? To the best of our knowledge, it was never a part of the lives of people who lived during ancient times. After centuries of cosmetic use, it is most interesting that only in recent times have the toxic ingredients in cosmetic products come under scrutiny. And, the more we learn about the damages that these toxic ingredients might cause, the more careful we should be in the type of cosmetic products we purchase and use on a daily basis.
Now I know you all may think that you use the best cosmetics available, and you even have chosen the natural path i.e., your cosmetics contain the necessary vitamins and oils for your skin and for your general health. Think again, as you may have been sold a cosmetic product that neither contains natural ingredients nor does it have the proper organic cosmetic certifications that would guarantee the products are safe to use daily!
Though a startling revelation, the truth is that most of the organic cosmetics that are being sold in the market today are not actually organic. The only way to judge whether a cosmetic is organic or not is to verify the certification of the product you are using. Do not be blindfolded while purchasing cosmetics; as you may be handed a product that is filled with harsh, toxic chemicals and acids. You are more likely to suffer from skin ailments with the use of toxic cosmetics than you would be if you used a pure organic cosmetic. The reason is very simple - there are a lot of toxic chemicals like mercury, aluminum, coal tar, and lead in the synthetically produced cosmetics. In packaging and labeling many companies use type that is so small, you would need a magnifying glass to read the ingredients and words that are so foreign you would have to be a scientist to decipher them. For example, what is a Paraben (preservative) or a Pthalate (fragrance)? You get the idea.
There is every reason as to check the organic cosmetic certification of the products that you are purchasing - after all it becomes a question of your health, general well being, and the condition of your skin that is at risk. Certification is proof that the products being manufactured are in strict compliance with the ingredients and processes that have been accredited, not by the US government because the US government allows the cosmetic companies to govern themselves, but by the certification agencies that companies must submit their products to for certification. The certification standards may vary from one agency to another, but the standards that are followed by that specific agency are uniform standards for all countries. The standards that have been set for providing organic certification are pretty high, and this is the reason why one can be certain of the quality of the products that come with certification.
Although the US does provide certification through the USDA, most US companies are not interested in getting certified, as using organic products in the manufacturing process is more expensive, thereby reducing profits. Also, because the Cosmetic Industry is self-regulated, the cosmetic companies can make organic and/or natural claims, without certification, and no one will challenge them. Therefore, companies are more likely to go offshore to Europe, Asia or Oceania for certification. Agencies like the UK Soil Association, or Ecocert (France), or BDIH (Germany), are more likely to be used, simply because these countries demand their products be free of toxic material. In fact, the European Union has banned well over 1000 chemicals in the cosmetic manufacturing process, while the good old US of A has banned a mere 10 chemicals. Again, you get the point.
Manufacturers in the US actually lobby against the removal of toxic ingredients in the manufacturing process claiming that these products are safe to use. However, recent clinical studies have shown that many of these toxins are carcinogens, and linked to cancer. Many lipsticks still contain lead, a highly toxic ingredient with the highest hazard risk of 10,. provided by the Cosmetic Database, the largest cosmetic ingredient database in the world. All the products that are manufactured in the US do not have to pass any pre-market quality tests to enter the marketplace. Again, the Cosmetic Industry is self-regulated and what that means is simply this. If a cosmetic company deems their products to be safe, they can be marketed. It is that simple and it should be that scary to all consumers!
Organic cosmetic certification is the best way available for the consumer to judge the quality of the cosmetics they use, and it is advisable that one checks this every time one purchases a cosmetic product. The certification logos will be prominently placed on each product alongside other logos like recyclable, or biodegradable, or no animal testing, etc. You must, however, visually see the logo and not take the manufacturer's word that the product is natural or organic. They can and will put anything they want on the product because no one is watching, and their ultimate goal is to make the sale. They have no interest in your health. Therefore, in the end, it is buyer beware! Read the labels and do the research if you want to be assured of buying safe, healthy, toxic-free cosmetic products.
Though there are many companies that want to dupe their customers for revenue and profit purposes, it is also true that there are many other companies that believe in providing the best, safest, healthiest personal care products. Most of the companies that want to provide the best products were all natural from their inception, and most of the companies that want to dupe their customers are the large manufacturers that place profits before people and never have any intention of creating all organic and/or natural personal care products. This is exactly where organic cosmetic certification comes into play and should be seriously considered before purchasing any cosmetic product.

With life becoming ever more stressful for a lot of people, having somewhere to wind down and relax is incredibly important. Modern shower enclosures offer people a great space to do this, but there are a few things people should know before they set out on their quest to find the perfect one.
The other important point that you should note is buying everything from one place would always be simpler, especially if you choose a supplier who can meet all your product, technical and service needs. There are many on-line shop that offer shower trays at very cheap price. And other shop would offer shower enclosure at cheap price. Buying from two different suppliers would end you up paying two deliveries, and the cost of the product will go up.

The Range

There is a huge range of modern shower enclosures that are available to the general public. They come in a range of different materials, although the majority are made from glass. Alongside this, consumers will be able to find them in different colours, designs and of course; sizes. In fact, some on-line shops offer bespoke design as well, specifically for an individual’s bathroom requirement. One Range that I would like to mention about is Ideal Standard Synergy Range of Shower Enclosures. Synergy Range of Shower Enclosure from Ideal Standard offers square-edge look and high fashion feel. Ideal Standard Synergy shower enclosures bring a contemporary edge to the entire bathroom. All the other elements of bathroom also works in harmony after synergy shower enclosure is installed, giving a high-fashion feel with a directional but classic look that won’t date. Another point that I would like to mention is that if you have elderly people in your home than considering good accessible shower enclosures would be crucial. Good, accessible shower enclosures are becoming of greater interest and are available in the local market.

The Cost

Just because modern shower enclosures look high class, certainly does not mean that they have to be expensive. In fact, these items are becoming more and more popular, which mean there is great scope for finding one incredibly cheap. There are smaller modern shower enclosures that are suitable for small houses and bathrooms. That being said, there are much more expensive modern shower enclosures which have been designed with much larger homes in mind; there is an enclosure for every home and budget! In order to find cheap shower enclosure in the market you need to find the best sellers. The one that’ the best seller will be definitely of good quality and would be value for a money product. Some of the Best sellers that I would like to mention are Aqualux Shine, Twyford Geo6 and Twyford Hydr9. All these range have been awarded by several award bodies, complementing its design, functional and value for price product. These shower enclosures are from the top of the market featuring 8mm glass and the new invisible fix system, to highlight their bespoke capabilities. Made to measure bespoke facilities are not available in this enclosure system till yet.

The Style

There is a range of different styles. Some of the styles are not suitable for smaller homes and some are not really considered to be suitable for bigger homes. For instance, a property that has a fairly small bathroom is not likely to benefit from having a standalone modern shower enclosure. This will reduce the space that can be used in the bathroom and will make it seem even smaller than it already is. A well designed shower enclosure must offer linear and geometric shape whilst the design elegance should be softer. There’s a wide range of configurations and a big choice of both swing and sliding door enclosures in the UK market. The configuration options mean it is possible to combine door types with other doors or side panels. If you are looking for a three sided enclosure you can purchase one sliding shower door and two side panels to make a complete cubicle. Or you can even use one sliding door and install between two walls to make it as a recess shower door. Swing Doors usually known as quadrants comes in two styles. One is the sliding shower quadrant, whilst other type of quadrant can be open outwards. Before purchasing a enclosure or a cubicle its must to see the magnetic sealing on both the opening and closing side. Shower enclosures also come in an option of frameless and part framed. It depends on the home owner which style of enclosure he or she would prefer to be installed. Frameless shower enclosures are slightly expensive than part framed. Here are few simple tips and suggestion that would help you to choose the correct enclosure for your bathroom.

However, you should not just rely on referrals in getting that perfect cosmetic surgery. It would be most beneficial for you if you can do your own research. The Biggest And Baddest Transformers

On of the many great things about the Transformers is that they range from the size of a small car to the size of a building. There are hundreds of Transformers characters that change into all manner of things including cars, trucks, jets, a UFO, a city, a hand gun, dinosaurs, stereo and a microscope. Basically anything Hasbro could make a toy out of. The bigger the transformers characters the bigger and more expensive the toys are so Hasbro have pulled out all the stops to make sure there are plenty of giant robots on the market.

Metroplex is an eighties Generation 1 favourite. Metroplex transforms from a huge white robot into Autobot city and a mobile fortress. He appears in the fourth series of the Transformers G1 cartoon. When he does show up he is normally found fighting the Decepticon Tryptych. The toy of Metroplex stood at about a foot high and comes with a number of accessories which turn into guns that attach and vehicles that can be put inside the city base.

Tryptych is the foil to Metroplex. He's a giant T Rex Dynosaur who doesn't transform into anything. In the 4th series of the Transformers cartoon he has some great scenes where he hangs out with his Decepticon buddy. He has lots of fights with Metroplex. Maybe if there's a Transformers 4 we'll see Metroplex and Tryptych face off on screen.

Devastator is the original combiner Transformer and is comprised of 5 constructicon Decepticons. There have been many combiners since including Defensor and Superion. Devastator is Megatrons deadly weapon against the Autobots and is seen in the first three seasons of the Transformers cartoon as well as the animated movie. Devastator was also featured in the live action movie Revenge of the Fallen but looked radically different to his G1 counterpart. The G1 Devastator toy is made up from the five small green constructicons. Each constructicon transforms from a robot to a vehicle individually and joins together to become Devastator.

Unicron is the biggest of all the Transformers and is neither Autobot nor Decepticon. He transforms from a robot into a planet. He made his debut in the Transformers animated movie and was voiced by none other than Orson Welles. In the movie Unicron takes the nearly dead body of Megatron and turns him into Galvatron so that he can do his bidding. One toy of Unicron that I've seen is massive and stands at nearly two feet tall.

mac Cosmetics - Find Out If the Cosmetics YOU Use Are Safe Or Dangerous

If you haven't read any of my articles before it may come as a surprise to you that the cosmetics that you use may be hazardous to your health. Believe it or not, not all cosmetics are safe. Safe cosmetics are, in fact, hard to find.
How can this be? Why in the world would the cosmetics that you use be dangerous? Surely the FDA regulates anything we use in or on our bodies to make sure that they are safe for us to use?
Sadly, no. Yes drugs are regulated and the drug companies need to conform to certain safety standards, but those standards don't apply to either companies making cosmetics, or companies making skin care products or personal care products and health and beauty products.
Basically these companies can use any ingredient in their cosmetics, regardless of whether they've been shown to be safe for human use. And big multi nationals being what they are, if there is an ingredient that they can use in their products that is cheaper than a safe alternative they'll use it.
Regardless of whether it results in some risks to users.
Here's an example. A recent study found lead in over 50% of big brand lipsticks tested. Lead? Are you kidding? In our lipsticks? Sadly again it's true. Some of the biggest names in lipsticks contain lead.
This prompted the California legislature to legislate against lead in lipsticks.
Regulation on safe cosmetics ingredients is sadly lacking in the US. Standards are much much stricter in Europe. So the cosmetics that you and maybe your daughters use can contain dangerous ingredients.
I have personal experience of this. My then 7 year old daughter was due for her first ballet concert and they used all the normal cosmetics on her and within half an hour she had a terrible rash all over her face. We removed the cosmetics, the rash disappeared and hasn't reappeared.
We now use safe cosmetics for her ballet concerts.
The problem is so bad that there are now whole organizations set up to promote safe cosmetics and alert the public to the danger of the big brand cosmetics. And do the cosmetics companies change their behavior? Do they use safe ingredients in their cosmetics? Still no. They don't.
One such organization is called the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics. They attempt to expose as many of the risks of dangerous cosmetics as possible, to try and force our government to regulate the industry and the companies to produce safe cosmetics. And they run a Compact for Safe Cosmetics. Cosmetic companies that are prepared to dedicate themselves to produce only safe cosmetics can sign the compact to evidence their commitment to safe cosmetics.
And there is an organization called Teens Turning Green which helps direct teenagers towards safer cosmetics and other products, amongst their goals.
So how do you find out if the cosmetics you are using now are safe cosmetics or dangerous cosmetics. There is a way. There is a database called the cosmetic safety database, and you can use their database to search either the product that you're worried about, or the name of the company that makes them.
I just searched the Avon Ultra Moisture Rich Lipstick by way of example. On a scale of hazard from 1 to 10, 10 being the highest hazard, it rates a 9. High hazard. I'm told the ingredients in this lipstick are linked to cancer, developmental/reproductive toxicity, allergies and immunotoxicity and a whole host of other hazards including neurotoxicity and more.
Scary isn't it. However there are cosmetics companies dedicated to making safe cosmetics and personal care products. Dedicated to using such ingredients as certified organic ingredients and natural ingredients that are proven to be safe before they are used. That set their highest goal as producing high quality safe cosmetics and personal care and beauty products, rather than just focussing on profits.
There's not many, but there is some. And if you're worried about the safety of the cosmetics that you, or maybe your daughters uses, you need to find them. Now.

Are Your Cosmetics Safe?

Cosmetics are defined in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act as:
(1) articles intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled, or sprayed on, introduced into, or otherwise applied to the human body or any part thereof for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance, and
(2) articles intended for use as a component of any such articles; except that such term shall not include soap.
In the United States, cosmetics are being used by teens at a younger and younger age, and cosmetic safety has become quite an issue. Cosmetics can become contaminated with bacteria that the brush or applicator sponge picks up from the skin. Wearing cosmetics to bed, sharing cosmetics, scratching yourself with a mascara wand, and aerosol fumes are the top dangers of cosmetic use.
The most irritating ingredients in cosmetics are talc, dye, fragrance and preservatives. It is unfortunate that the preservatives which prevent bacterial build-up are also very bad for your skin.
It is not surprising, therefore, that there is an increased interest in natural and organic cosmetics. The two main categories of safer cosmetics are mineral cosmetics and hypoallergenic cosmetics.
Mineral Cosmetics
Mineral cosmetics are quickly coming out of dermatologist clinics and high-end spas to retailer near you. Certified organic products and non-toxic makeup are becoming more mainstream as they demonstrate that they are as effective as those of the leading cosmetic companies. Women who use mineral cosmetics are said to experience fewer break-outs, as they are not affected by chemical preservatives.
This natural makeup is the simplest, most natural, and non-reactive form of cosmetics. Mineral cosmetics are made from minerals and inorganic pigments that exist in nature. Because it is not made from organic materials it cannot produce bacteria and there is no need to add chemical preservatives. Endless combinations of beautifully colored minerals, such as mica, titanium dioxide, zinc and iron oxides, and ultramarine pigments, can be used. These elemets are created to make every cosmetic from foundation to eyeshadow to shimmer powder for the body. They are finely milled and purified, treated or coated with other pigments to create different colors and effects. Mica, for example, is a transparent mineral which is mined from the earth in thin sheets. Due to the sheer, translucent, and skin-hugging effect of the mica mineral, your natural skin tone shines through.
With mineral makeup you get all of the coverage, color, and finesse, without the chemicals, synthetics, and dyes. Mineral foundation looks and feels much more natural, without sacrificing any of the coverage. It allows the skin to breathe while balancing and protecting all skin types. The light mineral powders let skin breathe naturally and it does not settle into pores. If you've ever had trouble finding a foundation that matches your skin tone or locating that perfect eyeshadow color, you will love mineral cosmetics.
Hypoallergenic Cosmetics
Hypoallergenic cosmetics are products that makers claim cause fewer allergic reactions than other products. They are a greathelp to those with sensitive skin. Hypoallergenic cosmetics contain a minimum of allergenic ingredients, such as perfumes and preservatives, which will cause skin irritation and other allergic reactions.
However, there is a controversy about the labeling of hypoallergenic cosmetics. Manufacturers of cosmetics labeled as hypoallergenic are not required to submit substantiation of their hypoallergenic claims to the Food and Drug Administration, (FDA). For the past four years, the FDA has been working to clear up this confusion of claims by establishing testing requirements that would determine which products really are hypoallergenic. A cosmetic would be permitted to be labeled hypoallergenic or make similar claims only if scientific studies on human subjects showed that the product caused a significantly lower rate of adverse skin reactions than similar products not making such claims.
The manufacturers would be responsible for carrying out the required tests. The guidelines have not been finalized yet, and manufacturers may continue to label their cosmetics as hypoallergenic without any supporting evidence. Undoubtedly most products that claim to be hypoallergenic actually are, but be an intelligent consumer; read labels carefully, do some studying yourself, and do not rely solely on manufacturers claims.
Consumers concerned about allergic reactions from cosmetics should understand that no cosmetic can be guaranteed never to produce an allergic reaction. Even products that have natural ingredients can cause allergic reactions. If you have an allergy to certain plants or animals, then you may have an allergic reaction to cosmetics containing them. If you do have an allergic reaction to a cosmetic, you should stop using all cosmetics until you and your doctor can determine which ingredient or combination of ingredients caused the reaction. Even if you have used a particular cosmetic for years with no problems, you can develop an allergic reaction. This occurs as you become sensitized to one or more of the ingredients.

Avid Media Composer Mac

In the upgrade "Read Me" (which, BTW, I did read) there are installation notes for Mac users that say to install only on a "clean" version of Leopard. This was a bit much for my little head. Did it mean clean as in "wipe and reformat" clean or clean as in "upgrade" clean? Michael Phillips, Solutions Manager, Content Production at Avid clarified this for me saying Mac users can uninstall Composer 2.8 from Tiger, upgrade to Leopard with no need to wipe and reformat the drive and install 3.0. My issue stemmed from immediately installing 2.8 on Leopard when I first bought it. Why you ask? Because, I didn't read the "read me" file. (Ugh!) Confirmation once again that it pays to RTFM (read the fabulous manual). After walking me through uninstalling and then deleting some remnants of the previous version, I re-installed, rebooted, and voila, problem solved.

This is where it got fun. Media Composer 3.0 booted fast and clean. While doing so, it notified me that it needed to update my Mojo SDI firmware and proceeded to do so without a hitch. (I have been told that some users have had issues upgrading their original Mojo boxes, so check Avid's knowledge base for the latest information). The software loaded, (cue angelic music from the beginning of "Simpson's" episode) and immediately I could tell something was different. You might say, how can you just tell something like that? Well let me tell you, after 16 years of editing on this software, when something is different, you CAN feel it. Adrenaline on Mac didn't feel robust to me. In fact if felt kind of frail and my experiences with it confirmed this. I crashed more often than Meridian, it was not as responsive and after cutting a feature in HD on Final Cut Pro, it was a drag to have to go back to using Tiger.

Kernel Panic....Argh!

That's right, the grey screen of death. I'm thinking, what a drag. Why do I always do this to myself?

I call Avid support and explain my situation. It's here I have a chance to see some of Avid's "new thinking" in action. Now get this, the person on the other end of the line actually empathizes with me! I'm stunned. In the old days I would have had to pledge my first born, or purchased a very expensive yearly support contract. Avid now offers what I believe is a fair price for per-incident support but better than that, on this call they were kind enough to comp me a 24 hour support ticket! I thanked them profusely and proceeded to contact TS. After a short wait I got someone on the line. The voice had a thick accent, but at least I could understand him. He seemed pretty stumped when I first describe the problem, but after a short discussion we figure out that it was... (trying to look innocent) something I did. How surprising.

Many of us who have been cutting on the Mac version of Avid's Media Composer have felt a bit neglected over the last few years, and to a certain extent, rightfully so. We sat and watched as Avid got the wind knocked out of it by Apple's introduction of Final Cut Pro. Apple's lower prices and integration with newer versions of the Mac OS came as a great step forward in the democratization of media and Apple ran a full court press on Avid's dominance of the digital editing tools market. Avid struggled to find their way as the price of editing tools dropped, and the company that created and dominated modern digital editing found themselves having toplay catch-up.

Today I write about the first manifestation of Avid's "New Thinking," Media Composer 3.0. With a new team of top executives, lower prices and an emphasis on customer satisfaction, Avid is not only talking the talk, they are walking the walk. Media Composer version 3.0 delivers on the company's promise to do business in a new way, and with the exception of a few minor hiccups (self-imposed as I quickly learned) my transition from 2.8 to 3.0 was not only painless, it was downright fun.

I start putting 3.0 through it's paces and at the risk of sounding hyperbolic, it is ROCKING. No latency, no glitchiness, (my word, Colbert) picture quality is noticeably and substantially better and the playhead is slicing through multi-layer, real-time effects and title comps like "butta".

Ever the digital editing daredevil, I decided to do the upgrade right in the middle of locking a feature film. (Actual stunt editor. NOT recommended for sane users) The footage, which was originally captured to an Avid Unity on Adrenaline, had subsequently been transferred to a 1TB G-RAID and had been knocking around town on several different systems for almost a year. I backed up all my project data in the event of catastrophe. (I'm crazy, not stupid) I installed the upgrade, restarted the computer and....

Vulnerability Protection and Mac Systems

Another important vulnerability protection for Mac systems is avoiding websites that aren't appropriate for work. While there are few viruses that can infect a Mac, many of them exist on these sites, waiting to infect your machine. Educating your employees about what sites are appropriate is critical. Viruses can lurk anywhere, but visiting sites that aren't necessary for business increases your risk of coming across spyware or viruses that may infect your machines.

Although you may have a Mac system, it is still possible to be running Intel-based Windows on it. Windows is Windows, no matter what computer you are running it on, and it is susceptible to Windows-specific viruses and attacks. You can't let your guard down on vulnerability protection just because you have a Mac system. If you are running Windows on your Mac, be sure to investigate anti-virus programs and security protocols that work on both systems. If you need a little assistance choosing your best defense, consider working with an IT consultant. They know the market and the products available and can secure your system in no time.

Even though vulnerability protection for Mac systems is less extensive than it would be for Windows, you still need to protect your business or personal information. The risks may be low, but they still exist, and you can't take chances with your customers and data. By installing comprehensive anti-virus programs and using safe computing skills, you can keep your system clean and your business running smoothly.

While highly touted as being less susceptible to attacks, Mac systems and their users still need to consider vulnerability protection needs. There are viruses and attackers that can get into your system, and the damage they cause can be severe. Knowing the vulnerabilities, accounting for them, and reassessing them regularly are key steps to keeping your network safe. You may be safer with a Mac, but you are still not immune to attack.

The Truth about Macs and Safety

While it is true that Windows systems suffer more viral attacks and may not be as secure as Macs, it's important to understand that this is because Windows is used more widely, not because Macs are actually built to be safer. Most viruses and attackers specifically seek out Windows weaknesses to exploit, so it is the sheer number of viruses targeting Windows instead of Macs that offers the protection, not the system itself. As Macs become more and more popular, vulnerability for Mac systems will become critical, as the weaknesses in these systems will be increasingly exploited.

Vulnerability Protection for Macs

Installing an anti-virus program for your Mac system is a good start. There are less than 200 known viruses that target Macs, but these programs are a minimal investment and are easy to install. The chance of a viral attack may be small, but if you're a target, it's worth the time. Installing and updating an anti-virus program on your network can significantly increase vulnerability protection on your Mac system. Using the program to scan incoming email and attachments is always a smart move.

Daniel Gottilla provides information about selecting a vulnerability scanner or understanding vulnerability method of attack, if you have questions please visit our website.

Data Loss During Upgradation to Mac OS

However, with some of the applications, this is not as smooth as it is said. While trying to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, sometimes, you can only get an option of 'Erase and Install'. Even, the installation process gets interrupted with an error message and the hard drive becomes inaccessible thereafter. The situation can only be handled with any Mac recovery utility, as the drive carries your valuable data in it and you can't afford experimenting, which may even damage your data.

Resolution:

The problem can be resolved by fixing the errors related to the hard disk. For this, you can use the tool Disk Utility, which is meant to verify and repair the storage device. Insert the Macintosh system installation disc and run Disk Utility from there to fix the errors in the hard disk.

However, at times, Disk Utility also fails and throws error messages such as: "Incorrect number of Extended Attributes (it should be 0 instead of [some numbers])"

If the Disk utility fails, the only way left is to Erase and make a fresh installation. In that case, you have to restore the lost data from the previously taken backup. In case, backup is not available, you can recover your data only through any Mac recovery software. These Mac recovery utilities are powerful enough to recover your data under any instance of data loss and along side, are easy to use.

Stellar Phoenix Macintosh Data recovery is a highly appreciated Mac recovery software which is capable of recovering any lost, deleted or formatted Mac data from almost all data loss situations. The software supports a number of different file types and works well with Mac OS X 10.3.9, 10.4, 10.6 and 10.5.

The error message in the above situation can be as below:

"You can not install Mac OS X 10.5 on this volume with out changing your installation settings."

Such a problem can be the outcome of a variety of reasons. One of the prime observation says that if you have used the tool 'TechTool Pro' in order to create an eDrive on the destination volume, then the problem as above usually happens with Mac OS X 10.5. Apart from this, the check process of the Leopard through the hard disk can cause such a problem. Mac OS X 10.5 makes a complete scan of the hard drive before it lists the drives & volumes in the destination window and if it fails, problem like the above surfaces.

Allen Sood is a technical writer having vast experience on working with Mac OS X, doing research on Mac data recovery also likes reading Apple News & Journals, Macrumors,Tuaw updates, And he is currently working for Drive tool Box for mac.

In digital world, every other day, you can come around some new inventions and hence, upgradation of the older versions of the applications to newer ones is quite common. In order to upgrade your old application to a new one, you needn't have to do much. You just have to follow certain steps systematically and the rest will be done automatically by the application itself.

Gig Line Your Business Direction With What a Mac Can Do

If you have never been in the military, a gig line is used to describe how you are dressed. A gig line is lining up your shirt, belt, tie, and pants "lines" so that you look professional and sharp. In your personal world it is preparing yourself and lining up your mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional self to handle the rigors of the business world. In the business world, you line you line up your resources, money, time, and personnel effort selling a product/service to a customer and making a profit. So, let's see if your Mac gig line can be done.

Operations

    * Billing and Accounting - billing is about sending out invoices to be paid and accounting is about tracking all of your business expenses and income for tax purposes. Get an accounting package such as Quicken rather than doing things by hand or using a spreadsheet such as Numbers/Excel since it makes things much easier to recalculate and "slice and dice" the data to determine taxes and information for paing bills.
    * Business Tasks - such as mailing for invoices or newsletters, etc. These will vary according to the type of business you are in.

If you're starting a business, let me know if you have any questions and I'll be glad to answer them for you.

If you have any other ideas, visit MacGetIT.com for more ideas to how to use a Mac in a business.

I have been using Macs since the Mac 512ke days and currently use a MacBook Pro to run my Mac Consulting business and my wife runs her Real Estate business using a Mac. I have helped thousands of small businesses getting them set up using a Mac and helping them get the most out of the use of their Mac.

Over 95% of the businesses that I have consulted with can switch from using a PC to using a Mac for their business with very little issues involved. The other 5% need to run Windows because they have a few applications where there are no Mac equivalent types of software, such as an anthropological, forensic, or other niche industry solution that there is little to no Mac solution.

Marketing using iWork and iLife '09

    * Garageband - allows you to create your own music, but more importantly, create your own podcast or audio file to be incorporated into iMovie.
    * iMovie - allows you to create movies of how to build a storage shed, an interview of a local celebrity that endorses your product, or even a product/service testimonial of your business.
    * iPhoto - putting your digital pictures into iPhoto gives you control over product pictures using keywords, putting together a monthly newsletter using seasonal pictures and keeping track of them, and even doing minor editing of them in iPhoto.
    * iWed - creating a web or blog site describing your company
    * iDVD - creating a full blown DVD of all of the above files to hand out to customers.
    * Pages - to write your marketing copy, create Request For Proposals (RFP), or create flyers or brochures to give to potential customers.
    * Numbers - create catalogs or quotes for customers.
    * Keynote - create a presentation to give to customers or have them download them off of your web site.

So, how is a business run using a Mac? Well, there are a few things that need to set the stage to use the Mac.

1. Type of business determines the solution. Your business determines what hardware and software solutions that you intend to use. A dentist will use different software than a graphic artist or a writer, however, there are some similarities to all of them.

2. Switchers can do it. If you are switching from a PC there is a way to finding the answer to switching. Write down all of the Windows applications that you use, define what they are (such as word processor, photo editor, etc) and then find the Mac version of that type of software that you use. If there are no Mac solutions that you like, you can run Windows under Apple's Boot Camp or virtualization software Parallels or Fusion.

3.Type of solution depends on capability. If you are a writer you'll need specific tools to be able to write for multiple customers and vendors. If you are a graphic artist you'll need other tools.

So what software solutions are there for a startup business or an entrepreneur that nearly all of them could use?

Sales

    * Business documents - using Apple's iWork is a great start in using Pages, Numbers, and Keynote to handle your startup business documents.
    * Contact Management - keeping track of all of the vendors and customers whether you have 100, 1000, or millions of contacts the various Mac solutions an handle it. Apple's Address Book is a start to begin tracking this information, but the more you track the more you'll need a larger application.
    * To Do List- we all have tasks to do to get done. Apple's iCal can handle simple To Do lists, but other solutions are available to handle more difficult tasks.
    * Calendar- making sure you schedule your time and priorities means that you keep your calendar free of non critical stuff and schedule only those things that are most important, such as family and friend time. Again, Apple's iCal can handle a Solo Entrepreneur's calendar of events, but you may need a better solution of the numbers get too big or it gets to complicated.
    * Sales/POS (Point Of Sale) - keeping track of your sales and the accounting of your income is extremely important to know whether you are successful or not. See below for a suggestion.

Mac Users Can Delete Duplicate Songs Easily

The problem is that going about this manually can be very difficult and time-consuming. Think about it; you would have to listen to each track, check the bitrates, see when you downloaded the file, and more, all to figure out which song you want to keep and which you want to delete or back-up. Luckily, there is lightweight software that does all of this work for you and it's just for Mac users.

Is your iMac or Macbook running slowly? Taking a long time to boot up? Are you staring at the 'spinning beachball' for too long? A big problem with Mac computers is that once they get clogged with duplicate files, they begin to perform a lot more slowly than they used to. If you download audio files or if your tunes library is packed with songs, then there's a good chance that you could use a clean-up. You simply need a way to find out which songs are duplicates, which version is the better version, and delete the audio files that you don't need.

Steve Gilbert is an Apple supporter/Mac enthusiast. He has experience with PCs as well, but prefers Macs due to their simplicity and reliability. He has lived in the Pacific Northwest for the last 10 years, and enjoys skatings, snowboarding, and the occasional HBO series. He's a big fan of getting rid of clutter and duplicate files, which overheat and prematurely end the lives of otherwise healthy Mac computers.

The software that I recommend is simple to use. You click a few buttons using the Wizard function, and within seconds you have searched out duplicate songs, files, programs, photos, e-mails, and more. The software compares bitrates, download date, author, length, and many more options. It becomes simple to back-up the songs you want for later, or to delete the songs that are just wasting space.

Life is too short to spend collective hours staring at loading screens and spinning beach balls. By using the software that I recommend, you can speed up your Mac to the way it was when you first bought it. If you need to delete duplicate songs, take a look at the software that I recommend.

Best Free Browsers for the Mac - Is There A Faster (And Better)

I realize that you might want different functionality than I do from a browser, I like lean and quick, you might need lots of functionality, so these apps are listed in no particular order of importance. All can be found quickly with your favourite search engine. And best of all, they're all FREE!

Omniweb

Once a paid for app from the Omni group, it's now been made freeware, which is great for Mac users in one way, but not in another. If a developer makes something free, it normally means that development will stall. I hope this isn't the case as this is a really nice browser. It's quick, very quick (Chrome only beats to the line by a short nose), it comes with drag and drop tabbed windows, workspaces that save your browsing sessions, history and window locations. The way it uses tabs is unique (they appear as a screen down the left side of the browser window instead of at the top), and it gives you the functionality to tune out all ads, popups and web blurb to leave you in peace with your browsing.

SeaMonkey

Strange name, but good features and lot of them. Tabbed browsing, Add ons, Feed detection and preview plus a smart location feature that finds previously visited sites as you type into the location bar. Like Opera it has a built in, fully fledged email client, plus an HTML composer, an IRC chat client and web development. The user interface might be a bit plain Jane, but this is the sister at home Opera doesn't want you to meet.

Camino

Another favourite of mine, but don't let that sway you. Unlike some other browsers, Camino has been built from the ground up exclusively for the Mac platform, and it shows. Tab overviews, Phishing and malware protection, download notifications, and a baby boomer proof ability to zoom the full content of a web page instead of just increasing the text size. The UI is totally uncluttered and functional and it uses the least RAM of all of them. Worth a look.

Splitbrowser

This app is both new and promising, and might just be the thing that Mac bloggers have been craving...the ability to have 4 different sites open in the same browser window - no more tab to tab to tab! I feel a bit of a flake here, as it's not a browser per se, but requires Safari running in the background. I'll be having an in depth look at this, and posting a review inside the internet marketing section also, as it looks like it could be a bit of a sleeping giant.

Google Chrome

Quick, Lean, Simple and Secure. Google has designed Chrome to be fast out of the blocks at startup, and it uses a Java based engine that is capable of running the most complex web apps. It's interface is clean and uncluttered, and it has malware and phishing protection built in. As at time of writing, everyones current favourite rave. For me, it's still not fully formed, but when it's finally sorted.....

Opera

Opera sells itself as the Macs fastest browser, and for me it is. An elegant interface that is quick to load webpages, optimized tabs with a neat preview function that lets you see content by hovering your mouse over it, the Opera design team has been hard at work at this over the past year. Not only have they incorporated a turbo function for slower internet connections but it also has its own built in email client, so you can have everything you need in one place on your worktop. I could sit all day and watch the wave effect moving over the open tabs, but that's between me and my therapist.

Firefox

For a long time now Firefox has been the big beast of browsers on both the Mac and PC. Now boasting zillions of extensions that can customize your browsing experience and it continues its development apace. A redesigned search bar, one click bookmarking, private browsing that keeps you anonymous on the web, Instant web site ID that warns you about flakey sites and lots more. A big, comfortable armchair of a browser. But why, with all these bells and whistles is there no formatted copy and paste function)?

Well, there you are, the browsers that in my humble opinion are the real competition to Safari. I honestly recommend you download all of them and give them a run out, I guarantee you won't be disappointed, and you might just find the application that suits you perfectly. Happy Browsing!

Jeff bought his first Mac in 1989, it had 1mb of ram, a 19mb hard drive and it cost him over $1400! He used it to produce everything from a local newspaper to a business card. Over the years he has upgraded and upgraded until now he stands up in his lofty retreat, arms folded and surrounded by the latest Macs humming away quietly in the background.

He's learned a lot about Macs in the past twenty years, and is keen to pass his knowledge on, whilst all the time waiting for the new Mac that will come with a 'press once to write an article' button.

Honorable Mention - iCab

The powerusers browser without doubt. Screamingly quick, a quirky but very mac like UI.

It's fast, secure, very light on memory and with too many configuration options to put down in one paragraph. The baby of a lone developer over in Germany, this really is a labour of love. Constant updates and bug fixes, this guy doesn't sit there staring out of the window all day, he's hard at it improving his product. Why just an honorable mention? I promised free browsers, and iCab is free as long as you want to put up with the floating window that will appear throughout the day (it's no big deal really, and not very intrusive), but to remove it the dev would like you to pay him $20. Personally I think it's worth it - he makes his living that way. See what you think - iCab has a cult following out there.

Best Pro Makeup Cases

Why buy a professional case?

Nothing is worse than opening a suitcase and finding that your foundation has exploded all over your clothing or that leaving your "bargain" type makeup case in the car for twenty minutes resulted in a meltdown of your products. There is more to consider than just keeping your cosmetics organized when buying a makeup case. My kit is worth at least $20,000 and although you may not have invested that much money in your personal cosmetics; it is still an investment not worth jeopardizing during travel. You don't have to be a professional makeup artist to appreciate the benefits of a professional makeup case. When you use a professional makeup case, your products are protected by insulation, sturdy design, and latches that will not pop open.

Quality cases

There are so many cases out there in cyber world, (most of which are knock-offs or copies of the better cases), that selecting one is almost overwhelming. My choices for best professional makeup cases are comprised of companies that have excellent reputations as far as quality control as well as choice of styles. Whether you are a professional makeup artist, a student, or the woman on the go, one of these cases is sure to fit your personal needs.

Margaux Lancaster has a passion for life, movies, and make up.

First introduced to the craft by noted make up artist "Gandhi" Bob Arollo, make up artist on Ghostbusters and ER, Uncle Bob showed his young protégé how to create a fake burn scar on her forearm using everyday items from the kitchen. The effect was life changing and Magaux was hooked.

What style of case is best?

There are so many cases to choose from. Some open accordion style and some open cabinet style. Do you want a soft-sided case or a hard case? I always check for a good sturdy handle, the weight distribution, and that the latches will stay closed. In-line wheels are also a plus when you are traveling or just working day to day. Lastly, insulation is an invaluable asset when it comes to possible meltdowns. Japanesque and Shu Uemura cases are insulated to protect from heat. Although I would not leave my case of makeup in a car, it has been left in a hot makeup trailer over the weekend and never melted due to the construction of the case.

The Best of the Best: Altelier Makeup Box - Shu Uemura

The base of this makeup box has enough room to carry skin care items, brushes, and pencils. There are two sets of stacking tiers (three on each side) and the trays are removable. This case is soft sided and handmade with sturdy fiber pulp making it perfect for transporting large and full size products. The carrying handle is finished in leather and designed perfectly for hauling a large collection of makeup. These cases are larger to carry almost everything essential to the professional artist or student.

How to Use Makeup to Look Mesmerizing

My guy was mesmerized by a picture of a Japanese star. He found her ordinary looking in her other photos but in this one, she looked gorgeous.

The lips:

1. Pick a lipstick in a soft, rosy pink shade.
2. Use a lip brush to paint the lipstick onto your lips.
3. Apply a pink lip gloss over your lips for that mouth-watering shine that makes your lips look oh so sensual.

First, use foundation and concealer if you must to create the illusion of perfect skin. If you need a touch of color, apply a rosy blush on cheeks, with a very light hand. For a hint of color. Spritz with water to set the makeup. Then place a kleenex over your face to soak up the excess moisture.

The eyes:

1. Line eyes with a dark brown eye liner pencil or khol:

Draw as close as possible along the upper lash line. Start from the inner corner of the upper eye lid and thicken the line as you move from mid eye onwards.

Draw as close as possible along the lower lash line. Line from the middle of the eye outwards.

2. Use the flat side of an eye shadow brush and go over the liner. Smudge slightly to soften the look.

3. Open up the eyes with long lush lashes. Get false eyelashes, follow the instructions and put them on. Use this lash kit [http://www.everythingbeauty.info/lash%20kit.htm] to help you get started. Or you could use a lash curler on your eye lashes, then a lash-building mascara to make your eyelashes ultra long.

Same girl. Similar outfits. Yet, in one photo she was mesmerizing, in another, just like every other girl.

The difference?

Her eyes. In particular held his attention. That and her sensual lips. The way her mouth was slightly open, suggestively in those pictures.

Well, for starters, her eyes looked much bigger in that photo than in the other pictures. Here, the makeup artist employed eye makeup, for that smoky eye look.

That, paired with ultra long lashes give a girl mesmerizing eyes.

That is a tricky look to apply. Done wrongly, it can make eyes look smaller. Or worse still, it can make a girl look really old.

Done correctly, eyes look sultry and much bigger.

The trick is not to rim the entire eye.

Here's what you can do.

A Simple Eye Makeup Look That Can Be Done in Minutes

Step One

Use a cream concealer that is a half shade lighter than your skin tone to start this process. You will put some on any dark circles that you might have. You can also put some on your eye lids to even out the color of the skin. This helps to make you look more awake and will get your eye makeup to last all day.

Step Two

Grab your blush brush and put some of the same blush that you are going to use on your cheeks across your eye lids. A light dusting of this color will help to give your eyes some depth without too much color.

Step Three

Grab one of your eye makeup compacts that you have. You can choose just about any color compact that you own to do this look. The key is that you are looking for a multi pack that has one light color that is known as a highlighter in it. This is the only actual eye shadow color that you will be using.

Step Four

Apply a little bit of the highlighter color to corner of each eye by the nose. You will put some of this light eye makeup color under your eyebrow where it arches. You can also use a fan brush and apply some of this color on top of your cheek bone.

Step Five

Finish your look with black mascara and eye liner on the top lid of your eye. If you layout all of the eye makeup and tools that you need to create this look in the morning, you can do this application in less then 5 minutes in the morning.

If you are trying to find a way to speed up your morning makeup routine then you are going to want to check out this application technique. You can easily find the time to put this look together when your morning coffee is brewing. This is a good eye makeup look to help you to look awake when you have over slept for work as well.

Tips To Enhance Your Natural Beauty With Makeup

This is a question I come across a lot, "How do I enhance my natural beauty?" Before you start thinking about enhancing your natural beauty you first have to identify which parts of your face gets the most compliments or are well proportioned. The basic idea is to enhance or apply makeup in such a way to make those parts stand out or get enhanced.

To determine which parts of your anatomy are a jackpot, pay attention to the complement s people give you when they meet you. Do people say you have beautiful eyes, eyebrows or lips? If that's the case, your eyes or whatever has a natural advantage, and the goal then will be to make them stand out.

If you think you have a wide nose and you want to make it appear proportionate to your face, apply a little white eyeshadow directly below your eyebrow at the curve. You will give the impression of your nose looking less wide and proportionate to your face.

Another way to give the impression of a smaller nose is to use a use a highlighter to make your cheek bones stand out and therefore your nose smaller. To achieve the opposite look, take white eyeshadow and brush it down your nose.

Eyeliner is component of your makeup that could become very permanent if you wear it all the time. It changes your face or look dramatically, and if you wear it all the time a time will come when people will not recognize you if you are not wearing it.

With the above mentioned strategy you are very much on your way to using your natural advantages in your favor. Always take note of colors, shades and makeup brands that work well with your physiology.

Deciding on which brand of makeup to use or colors to apply will depend on a lot of things such as your skin color and tone, and also whether you have clear skin. The reason is that different brands of makeup have different shades of the same color, and a brown color in one brand could be a different shade of brown in another brand.

Foundation
If you have clear skin then you have little use for foundation or concealer. If you don't then that is the first thing that goes on to get an even color all over your face before you start to apply anything. It's good to apply a light powder foundation to your face, it evens out your skin tone.

If you have nice lips wearing lipstick or lip gloss would make them stand out. Again the color of your skin will also accentuate the lipstick color you decide to wear. Light olive complexion and pale ivory complexion tend to go well with red lipstick. If you think your lips are not that great, then use basic nude colors to blend them with your skin tone.

Eyes, Mascara and Eyeliner
Most women believe that their eyes are their best features and I am yet to see a woman that does not believe that. The tendency here then is to make the eyes stand out, and this can be done with mascara. But remember, a little mascara is about all you need and brown mascara looks more natural than black.
